How to choose the best whale watching tour in Tenerife
There is no single best tour, but there is a best tour for what you actually want. The question is whether the animals are the point of the trip or the backdrop to it.
Two different products at similar prices
Along the seafront in Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos you will be offered whale watching from stands, hotels and apps at anything from €25 to €70. The price tells you almost nothing. What matters is the boat.

What to check before you pay
- How many people are on the boat? This single number predicts the experience better than anything else.
- Is there a biologist on board, or a guide? The difference shows the first time an animal does something unexpected.
- Does the boat hold the Barco Azul certification? It is regulated, covers conduct around animals, and can be checked.
- Is the operator a WCA partner? Independent assessment against a responsible whale watching standard.
- Where does it actually leave from? If you are bussed from Los Cristianos to Puerto Colón, that transfer is your time.
- What happens if you see nothing? A real guarantee means a free repeat trip, not a voucher with conditions.
Warning signs
- Any promise of a specific species, especially orcas.
- "Swim with dolphins" — not permitted with wild animals in Canary waters.
- Boats that arrive at a group fast and hold position with engines running.
- No mention of group size anywhere in the listing.
- Music playing on deck while animals are alongside.

Questions about choosing
Are the cheap catamaran trips a scam?
No — they are a different product. You get a boat trip with food, a swim stop and a brief look at some animals. If that is what you want, it is fine value. It is only a bad deal if you booked it expecting to watch cetaceans properly.
Does a bigger boat mean a smoother ride?
Marginally, but the sea here is sheltered enough that it rarely matters. A morning departure does more for seasickness than hull size.
How do I check an operator is legitimate?
Look for the Barco Azul (Blue Flag) certification, which is regulated and verifiable, and ask directly whether a biologist is on board and how many passengers the boat takes. Vague answers are answers.
